Learning the World of Technology Through Computers – A Tutorial

Technology has always been a part of our lives, from building the first clubs and fires to the Space Age and the Information Age. We always learn enough about technology to use it as part of our daily living, but computer technology is one of the least understood parts of our existence. Therefore this series of articles will clarify some of the mysteries of computers.
What are the benefits of learning more about computers? If you are totally satisfied and have no frustrations with your computer, you are part of a very lucky minority! However, like every other type of technology, the more you understand it the better equipped you will be to handle the many issues that can arise. Knowledge is power, after all! You will be able to help yourself better with this information, and you will be able to help, and impress, your friends as well. So let’s dig into the insides of your computer.
This introductory article will talk about the parts of the computer, and the difference between the various parts such as hardware and software, programs and data and memory and storage. Future articles in the series will go more in-depth on these as well as many other topics. Questions and discussions from readers will also be addressed in future articles.
What do you see when you look at a computer system? The most basic modern setup will include four components; the computer itself, a mouse, a keyboard and a monitor. There may be many other additional components such as printers, modems, speakers, microphones, etc. Let’s start with our basic four component system.
It is helpful to consider this model of the computer: The computer itself computes information (processing); we have to provide information into the computer (input) in order to receive new information from the computer (output). Every piece of computer equipment provides one or more of these functions, input, processing and output.
A keyboard and a mouse provide input into the computer. After processing the information the results are output to a monitor or a printer. Some devices can provide both input and output. For instance, we can receive an email from a friend (input from the internet through the modem) and reply to the email (output to the internet through the modem). Or you can create a spreadsheet and save it to your hard drive (input data to the hard drive) and later open the spread sheet from the hard drive (output data from the hard drive). The modem and the hard drive are capable of both input and output, so they are known as input-output (I/O) devices.
Hardware is any device you can physically touch. Every device talked about so far can be physically touched. Software cannot be touched. It is the electronic information created by the flow or absence of an electrical signal. You cannot touch the programs or data used on your computer. You can touch and hold a hard drive, or a CD or a DVD, so these are all examples of hardware. But you cannot touch the flow or absence of an electrical signal, the zeros and ones that make up the binary world of computers. If you can touch it, it is hardware; if you cannot touch it, it is software.
Programs and data are both considered to be software, because they are composed of the flow or absence of electrical signals, the binary zeros and ones that computers process. The words programs and applications are pretty much the same; they are instructions that tell a computer what to do. The data you create might be a document, spreadsheet, graphic, or email.
All software, programs and data, are kept on the computer in one form or another. When you are working on a word processing document, for example, you have loaded the program (word processor) and data (document) into the RAM (Random Access Memory) of the computer. This is where it is kept while the computer is actively processing the information.
But what happens when you turn off the electricity to the computer? There is only an absence of electrical signal, which would be all zeros in the binary world of the computer. So we must have a way of storing the information so we can use it again later. This is why we use the hard drive. But the hard drive does not have electrical current flowing when the power is off, so it uses an equivalent technique. Like the cassette tapes of yesteryear, the hard drive has a magnetic surface that stores information.
Think of a compass, with North and South poles. North and South can be used to represent the zeros and ones the computer processes. Now all the directions between North and South represent the full range of audio signals in …

PlayStation 3 Problems – Info on System Freezing and Black Screen Errors

PlayStation 3 just like other previous consoles of the same brand has its share of drawbacks and problems. Some problems are complicated and cannot be solved by an average user. While there are loads of other problems that can be easily diagnosed and solved by following some simple repair procedures

One of the most common problem is the PS3 freezing. Most of users have complained that their consoles just froze while they were playing a particular game. This problem is very general and can be caused by two reasons. One is that the disk of the game is either dirty or faulty, try playing another game and see if it happens again. Second and more valid reason is due to overheating. The PlayStation is a machine full of transistors and electronic circuits; add to it the blue ray disc also generates some heat. So to be sure that heat is not an issue use the console in a cool air conditioned environment and never houses the console in a small close compartment.

Another common problem is the black screen issue. This issue is caused by either faulty connection wires or a combination of wrong connection and resolutions setting. The remedies can be changing the wires and changing the connection settings from AV to HDMI. The settings of the PS3 and the television should match for it to be working properly.

For more information on problems mentioned above and others like the yellow light of death, lens cleaning and many more you should get hold of the PlayStation 3 repair guide. The PlayStation 3 repair guide has a whole list of problems that can be solved by an average user without taking the console to the company. The guide can help you save time and money by fixing the console yourself.…

An Overview Of Current DLP Technology

Digital Light Processing (DLP):

A History And Review Of Current DLP Technology

Whether you are in the market for a new TV, a front projector, or if you are simply trying to decide whether or not to replace your lamp – DLP technology is often the best value on the market. DLP’s are getting cheaper and cheaper. They are considered by many to be the best devices to deliver top-notch image quality at bargain pricing.

To understand the background of the technology, DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a trademark owner by Texas Instruments, representing a technology used in some TV’s and video projectors. It was originally developed by Dr. Larry Hornbeck of Texas Instruments, in 1987.

The first high-definition television (HDTV) sets hit the market in 1998. Since then a number of changes have occurred in the industry. While plasmas and LCD’s have garnered much of the attention over the last couple of years Digital Light Processing, or DLP, has quietly drifted under the radar. DLP is commonly used in front projectors and rear projection television sets. Precise digital images make DLP technology ideal for high definition.

By understanding the technology, we find out why it is superior. DLP technology is based on a chip that contains millions of tiny mirrors. These mirrors are systematically activated when they receive digital signals. This allows them to project a larger image onto the screen. The DLP chip is faster than any other imaging technology on the market. This makes it ideal for high-definition movies, sports, and television shows. The pixels in DLP technology refresh quickly producing images with greater sharpness, clarity, and contrast.

DLP is the leading technology in front projectors. Front projectors, similar to those used in movie theaters, can fill up to 100 inch screens. As DLP projectors became more and more affordable they have also benefited from an explosion in popularity. Their ability to project an enormous, high-quality picture from a relatively small device is currently unparalleled. This is why many home theater buffs and business people love front projectors for parties, meetings, and trade shows.

The Pros of DLP Technology:

DLP gives you a bigger screen size for less cost

DLP produces smooth and jitter free images

DLP produces great contrast in dark environments

DLP renders color magnificently

DLP does not retain images (“burn-in”)

DLP does not give off a “screen door effect”

If size matters than DLP delivers the most bang for your buck!…

Final Fantasy X Anima

Final Fantasy X Anima

An Aeon is basically a monster that you can summon to aid you in battle. Every Aeon is different, and most have a different elemental power (for example, Shiva is the goddess of ice and Ifrit is the god of fire). To gain an Aeon, you must first find it in the game then defeat it in battle. Final Fantasy X Anima is one of the scariest looking creatures in the entire game, and like each of his other Aeon compatriots, he is also available to fight as a Dark Aeon. Dark Anima is actually the second hardest boss in the entire game, just behind the Dark Magus Sisters. When Anima appears he is covered in chains, giving the sense that he has just risen from Hell and is not completely allowed to release his full power.

In Final Fantasy X Anima can be found in the Baaj Temple, and although he is such a key character to the game’s story, it is not necessary that you find him. Anima’s main attack is called ‘Pain’, and will kill almost any enemy in a single blow (barring a few tough bosses).

In Final Fantasy X Anima is one of the most difficult Aeons to beat, but it is absolutely worth it. Some consider Anima to be the strongest of all of the collectible summons in the game – even stronger than the trio of Magus Sisters. Part of the reason for this is due to his Overdrive, which can (when fully trained up) do over a million damage points! The second reason for this is that Anima deals non-elemental damage, meaning he is effective against virtually any enemy. Summons such as Ifrit are only good against Ice type enemies, and will actually give Hit-Points to fire-type enemies.…

PlayStation 3 Console Overview

PlayStation 3 Console Overview

What’s so impressive about the PlayStation3 Console? Maybe it’s the built-in high definition Blu-Ray player; or perhaps the life-like games that make you feel like you’re caught in the action; it could even be the sleek new design and stellar graphics linked with Playstation’s Dualshock wireless controller making your gaming experience more convenient.

The Playstation3 system is a full package: lots of elite games with great graphics; stunning picture quality liberated at an immaculate 1080p; a Blu-Ray player built-in to view all of your HD movies; and the ability to connect directly to the internet in seconds with a built-in Wi-Fi.

But aside from these things, one thing that truly breaks the PlayStation3 away from the rest of the pack is the PlayStation Network, often abbreviated as PSN. The PlayStation3 comes with a built-in network that as of June 2010 was over 50 million users strong. This network is a free network that helps users communicate with one another for: user to user chat; multiplayer gaming; scores and ranking, for player comparison; internet browsing and more.

Another great extra that comes with the PlayStation Network is the PlayStation Store. Here, gamers can visit a virtual marketplace offering a range of downloadable content both for purchase and available free of charge. The store includes playable demos, full games, add-on content, themes, and game and movie trailers.

Another extra found within the PlayStation Network is the Netflix application. Now, PSN users are able to enjoy instant access to thousands of Netflix titles and TV shows on demand, at the touch of a button. Netflix can stream movies or shows directly to your television set through the PlayStation 3 Console. What’s even better than that? Users will be able to watch their streaming movies in stunning 1080p while enjoying Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound and more content available with subtitles everyday.

A pleasant plus that comes with PlayStation3 web browsing capabilities, is that a USB keyboard can be plugged into the console to enable a more convenient browsing experience. Even though the web browsing interface isn’t the fastest surfing process out there, a user-friendly, dedicated keyboard definitely eases any frustration that may be found with impatient gamers.

Initially, the Playstation3 console seems like an overprice system, but is overall worth its value with everything packed into this console. A Blu-Ray player alone may run you more than $300. Now combine that with an HD gaming system, an internet browser and loads of other little goodies.…

Latest Information On Computer Repair Services

Anybody who owns a PC is at some point in time going to face problems or errors. This can be caused by a number of things from a virus to a corrupted window registry, or it could even be a problem with the computer’s hardware. Troubleshooting these types of problems can be difficult for the average user and this is when you will want to look into computer repair services to help you fix it.
There are many different types of services available, some can even help you online. Others may require you to actually bring your PC in for repairs, and there are even repair services that will come to your home, although at a higher fee.
Obviously before you deal with a company that is in the computer repair business you want to ask a few questions first. One of the most obvious would be how much they are going to charge you per hour, although some do not bill you by the hour but will have a fixed rate depending on the problem and the amount of time it takes to fix it. However, it is always a good idea to ask for a rough idea on how long it will take them to repair your computer.
Some PC related problems can be fixed very quickly and easily, in fact in a matter of a few minutes instead of taking several hours, therefore also find out if there is a minimum charge. Most stores will charge for at least one hour of labor and this is quite customary. Again, be aware that you will probably be charged more for a home visit as opposed to a store visit.
It is also very important to find out if there is any type of guarantee on the services that they provide, after all nobody wants to have their PC serviced again a few weeks later and it’s for a problem that is recurring. Usually you can expect at least a 30 day guarantee on the service that they provide, anything less than that, or no warranty at all is not acceptable.
In some cases, if your machine is having hardware problems they may have to replace certain parts. Some of these could include memory modules, the hard drive, the motherboard, graphics card and various other things which could go wrong. At this point you will need to take into consideration the cost of having parts installed, and whether or not it would actually be less expensive to just go ahead and buy a new one. However most of the time replacing the part will be the most cost effective thing to do.
Other things that a repair shop might do is to check your PC for spyware, malware, adware and viruses which can literally bring your system to a standstill. In most cases they will remove any infections and if necessary, install a good anti-virus program on your computer. Additionally they may also give your computer registry a good cleaning and tidy up all your files.
It seems like in this day and age we cannot live without our computers, and when something does go wrong we normally need it fixed as quickly as possible at a reasonable cost. This is where a professional who works with computers every day can bring your computer back to life and make it like new again.…

Will Business Gifts Replace The Bonus?

Will Business Gifts Replace The Bonus?

The word “bonus” has become something of a dirty word recently, with banks and large corporations attracting the headlines for paying their staff large sums of money despite the financial crisis. The eyes of the media are now fixed on these companies and every financial decision is being scrutinised for perceived fairness.

Even smaller companies are having their own bonus issues but in a rather different way. Those businesses who have survived the recession but who still might be struggling may not be in a position to pay their staff bonuses even though they might deserve them now more than ever.

It is a difficult time for companies who are looking to reward their staff and with Christmas just around the corner, many managers will be scratching their heads and wondering how to show their gratitude to their employees.

With the bonus culture seemingly going through a rocky patch, business gifts are expected to play a larger role than ever this Christmas. Business gifts can offer companies who for one reason or another will not be offering bonuses an effective way of rewarding staff, offering quality personalised gifts for the fraction of the cost of large scale bonuses. They also offer the recipient the unique feeling of receiving a wrapped present which can have a great affect on staff morale.

Employees may well be disappointed at not receiving a cash bonus but those who know about the financial situation will understand the need for their company to be more careful with their cash. Business gifts offer these companies the chance to give staff a much needed reward and incentive and will help the team to celebrate the festive period without breaking the bank.

In situations where every bonus payment is being scrutinised, business gifts can also provide a less controversial way of praising staff. Premium gifts can provide a rewarding alternative to bonuses and give companies the opportunity to recognise the employees who have flourished during these testing times.

If bonuses may prove a problem this Christmas, consider using business gifts to show your appreciation to staff and customers.…

Are You Ready For 3D TV? – Here’s What You Need to Know

With more and more movies hitting the big screen in 3D it was only a matter of time before it came to television.
Well that day is here and even though the technology is in its beginning stages 3D TV is here, it is exciting and can be enjoyed in your living room. But before you run out and buy anything there are certain things you need to know. Here is what you need to know before buying a 3D TV.
Watching a movie in 3D is quite an experience. In recent years 3D technology has really improved. Today it is much more than just images jumping out from the screen. There is a fullness and realistic feel to the new movies presented with this tri-dimensional technology. Today you can view movies like this at the theatre and in your own home.
Yes, you still have to wear special glasses no matter if you are viewing 3D in a theatre or in your home. But that is where the similarities end.
The type of 3D in the theatre is completely different to that on televisions.
How 3D Works
Quite simply the way this technology works is that two separate images are presented on a viewing screen at the same time. One image is intended for the right eye and the other image is intended for the left eye. When these images are viewed together it gives the illusion of three levels of depth vs. just the 2 dimensional picture we are normally used to.
Will the Glasses You Wear in a Theater Work at Home?
The answer to this question is a resounding– NO. So leave the glasses at the theatre. There are two different technologies at work here. Movies in the theatre, for the most part use a process involving polarizing light. The paper or plastic glasses you are given there are pretty simple, don’t required a power source, and work great for that type of a process. If the glasses are plastic, theaters wash and sterilize them, (or at least they are supposed to!) and then they are reused.
For televisions, the process is one in which the separate images for the right and left eye are refreshed several times a second. This requires special set of glasses that are called shutter glasses that are synchronized with the television and actually shut off the ability to view with each alternating eye as the images are shown on the television. This happened so fast that it tricks your brain into seeing images that are 3D. These glasses also require power.
Most are battery operated, some are rechargeable. As a result these glasses are more expensive, are a bit heavier and not considered disposable.
What Will You Need to Enjoy 3D in your Home
First and foremost you will need a TV that is designed for this type of viewing. As well, you need to think of this as more of a system that just having the TV. There are several parts of the system.
1. The first part of the system is a TV designed to provide a picture where there are two images that alternate very fast for the right and left eye.
2. You must also have special designed shutter glasses that are powered and synchronized with the alternating images.
3. There must be a signal or video that provides the multi dimensional image.
Types of Three Dimensional TV’s Available Today
At the present there are three versions of televisions available that offer this type of viewing experience.
1. 3D Ready. This means they come with the necessary design and components for three dimensional viewing except for the glasses.
2. 3D Capable televisions like this generally just need to have a device that emits an infrared signal to the glasses and the correct glasses.
3. Full 3D are package systems that have everything including the correct glasses.
At this stage of the game it is probably best to consider the full package system, then you know all components are designed to work together. But it is an exciting new technology that is moving forward at a fast rate. Imagine soon being able to see a Super Bowl football game in 3D!…
