Back in the mid nineteenth century the first 3D photographic image was created using stereoscopic imagery. Since then, 3D technology has advanced to televisions sets. Nowadays, a 3D TV set can use stereoscopic, multi-view, or 2D plus depth to create a three dimensional image for the viewer.
As of January 2010, at least five television manufacturing companies had announced plans to introduce 3D capacities in televisions sometime before the end of the year. These were expected to be higher end models. Satellite broadcasts in 3D as well as 3D Blu-ray players are also expected.
There is one 3D TV model made in China, and available for sale there. This television features a 43 inch LCD screen and uses a lenticular 3D system that does not require the use of special glasses. This model sells for $20,000.
ESPN has announced plans to launch a new channel in June of 2010 which is entirely devoted to 3D sports with as many as 85 live events in 3D each year. Other channels have similar plans. The Sky UK network intends to introduce the Sky 3D channel in April 2010. This is not to be confused with the South Korean channel, SKY, which, in January, became the first 3D channel in the world.
In most cases the use of special glasses will be required to watch various events and programming. Critics wonder whether viewers will grow weary of having to wear the glasses with regularity and if 3D programming is best left as a “special treat” that folks can enjoy occasionally to keep it interesting. Still, others argue that it will become as commonplace as TV itself and that people will become accustomed to the glasses.
Whether or not the concept of 3D TV sets catches on in the mainstream remains to be seen. There are more and more networks working on programming options and manufacturers that are focusing on adding this technology to future sets. Realistically though, the technology required for such a feat is way beyond the scope of any current technology today, even remotely. In fact, Star Trek has pushed science to its limits on many fields and presents with seemingly impossible challenges indeed such as warp drives, replicators, transporters, and scanners that instantly cure diseases and injuries.
But there are many other marvels of technology that are in our grasp and they will surely radically alter the way we live and interact with one another. Some things we are sitting on and just don’t know what to do with yet.
A major marvel that is clearly in our possession is the hologram. In fact, surprisingly enough, it’s been around for quite sometime now. A hologram is of course a replica of a real object formed by reflecting laser beams, though its main drawback now is its telltale “glow”. And if you haven’t already thought of it, yes, it is possible to hologram people and take video chat to a whole new level.
But it’s even more than that you see because as the technology develops, holograms will look absolutely real. Two holographic people will actually be able to meet in a virtual environment and feel the same as if they were actually with each other.
Well, almost- the problem is that replicator technology from Star Trek that so far leaves us clueless. Unless things really change, you won’t be able to hold or feel a hologram or even shake her hand. The Wii, Motion Technology and Gaming

On November 19th 2006, Nintendo changed the face of gaming by introducing motion technology to games consoles. This allowed for a whole range of different games which required a completely new type of gameplay. Instead of bashing buttons on a normal controller, gamers were given a remote. Before the Wii, no console had developed the technology to take advantage of motion sensors to monitor our movements. The Wii signalled the start of a new type of gaming where your actions could be imitated on the television screen right in front of you. They used this type of technology to develop many simple games such as Wii Sports, which has many short activities such as tennis and bowling. Since then, Nintendo have introduced many more games that require you to use the remote in completely different ways compared to a standard controller.
The main difference with the Wii is that it can require you to be much more active. With standard controllers, you can sit down and not move for several hours whilst gaming. With the Wii, some people prefer standing up as this gives them the room to perform a particular movement. This type of motion technology has attracted different types of people with the elderly being reported as enjoying a bit of Wii action in retirement homes.
This level of popularity has not gone unnoticed, which is evident with Xbox and PS3 releasing their own versions of motion technology. Xbox released their Kinect sensor in November 2010, where no controller was used in conjunction with the system and their main motto was ‘you are the controller’. But, slide the screen up and you’re looking at essentially a flattened dual shock controller, sans one set of shoulder buttons. The iconic 4-button pad is still there, as is the d-pad, and the dual control sticks have been replaced with two round touch pads.

According to initial tests, it seems to have enough power under the hood to handle 3D rendering with as much grace as any other competitor and more so, particularly because of its ample 512 megabytes of system memory. It’s an Android handset, a fact that’s clear enough once you notice the four Android hotkeys at the bottom of the screen. It’s running a modified version of the Android platform for now, changed to feature some healthy sprinklings of PlayStation flavors. It will be able to run any game you can imagine from the Android App store, and there are sure to be plenty of third party games developed for a mobile device with ‘PlayStation’ in its name. What’s more, the open Android platform makes finding decent emulators a snap, so you can play Super Mario World on the virtual Super Nintendo running on your Sony PlayStation Phone and stand there boggled by the staggering marvels you’re experiencing.…
